CHOOSING THE RIGHT GARDEN STYLE FOR YOU
When we ‘drool’ over the new plant introductions in plant catalogs that come our way during the winter months, we can envision these plants blooming happily in our own garden space. But sometimes the plants we see in the pretty pictures just aren’t suitable for our own particular garden area (i.e., we can’t have a shade garden in an area with no trees or other means to shade them, or a butterfly garden in dense shade).
We must plan for the type of garden we would like to eventually have. Choosing a garden style depends quite a lot on what you already have to work with. A sunny area that has a windbreak (hedge, fence, etc.) would be an ideal spot for a butterfly garden, with just the right attributes to provide the butterflies food, water, and shelter - the rest is up to you. This same area, with a few minor adjustments, would also be suitable for the herb garden you’ve always wanted, to provide you with fresh ingredients for those wonderful summer dishes.
Border gardens lend themselves to many areas around your home – from foundation plantings to areas along walkways and fences. Border gardens vary depending on the light requirements of the plants you select - shade loving plants for areas on the north side of your home, a lovely bog garden if you have a wet area to work with, a bright rock garden where the sun shines all day long, or several different levels of shade to part-sun gardens.
There are several other garden styles to consider – those especially designed for fragrance, and ones stocked with plants that provide a constant supply of cut flower for arrangements, just to name a few more. Patio gardens come in two varieties – gardens that are actually grown in pots of various shapes and sizes and placed on the patio itself and second, gardens that encompass the area around the patio itself – where the blooms can be enjoyed up ‘close and personal’.
The staff at Triple Creek Flower Farm will be happy to discuss these garden styles with you and help you select the right plants for your garden style. There are so many wonderful garden styles to consider that we’re positive you’ll find more than a few to intrigue you. |
